Back in 1970, the Vacuum Metallizers Assn. decided to broaden its scope, adopted the name Assn. of Industrial Metallizers, Coaters & Laminators, and AIMCAL was born, launching with 30 charter member companies. Fifty years later, AIMCAL enters a new decade with new Executive Director Chris Kerscher at a new headquarters in Greenville, SC, and a renewed commitment to serving the industry through education, professional connections and global business growth.
AIMCAL is the success it is today because of this three-legged stool of member benefits. From CEMA Fundamentals Seminars courses in the late 1990s to today’s AIMCAL TV webinars, Converting School and R2R Conferences around the world, educating the industry remains a key AIMCAL task. From the Technical Advisory Panel, committees centered on web processes and more (including the new Women’s Leadership Committee) to the online ASK AIMCAL service, industry members stay in touch and expand their professional connections. And lastly, from the annual SourceBook and market-research presentations to this Converting Quarterly B2B technical journal, AIMCAL is helping member companies grow both at home and around the world.
Even more so right now: As the novel coronavirus has spread to every corner of the planet, AIMCAL is doing its part to help members, their customers and, by extension, everyone respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. ASK AIMCAL acts as a clearinghouse to link supply and demand among member companies for:
- Packaging materials that keep foods and medicines safe and protected from the farm field and factory to the consumer
- Raw materials for PPE (personal protective equipment) for healthcare workers as well as face masks for the average citizen
- Materials and components for the respiratory ventilators that are needed to save the lives of those with the most serious COVID-19 infections
- Machines and parts that keep critical production lines running.
Just a few examples of those in the overall packaging and web-converting field stepping up to help: Mondi Group, Berry Global and Web Industries (nonwovens and face masks), Polymag Tek (disinfecting wipes), Charter NEX Films (PPE films), FLEXcon (face shields), and Phoseon (UV disinfection) are only a handful among the far more than can be included here.
It’s not original to say this, but as we all keep our distance from each other, remember “we’re all in this together.” I urge AIMCAL members, the industry in general, and you personally to do whatever you can to meet this historic challenge head on. Even if it’s just wearing a face mask
for the very infrequent times you go out, we’ll all be
better for it.
