Earlier in 2020, Kendall Packaging worked with CMD to complete the installation of a new, state-of-the-art Pouch Converting System from CMD at its Jefferson, WI, plant. The CMD 760-SUP Standup Pouch System is the latest addition to Kendall’s impressive store of advanced technology.
"Adding pouch converting to our capabilities gives us more options for customers, some of whom have requested that Kendall bring it in house," says Stewart Landy, Director of Sales.
This added capability infuses a level of flexibility and speed to market important for specific customers and gives Kendall the close control necessary for custom applications.
“We now have the ability to control everything in the process under our roof – we actually print, laminate, slit and make the pouches in our facilities,” adds Landy.
Adding the CMD 760-SUP won't completely change the business model for Kendall, who will still consistently use their network of co-converters "We've built and secured strong partnerships with our outside pouch converter partners," says Landy, "and we'll continue to do so. Our partners do things we don't, they fill a vital role in the quality products and services we offer our customers."
State-of-the-Art Converting Technology
“CMD has been involved in designing and manufacturing pouch converting systems for more than half of the 40 years we have been in business in Appleton, Wisconsin,” says Scott Fuller, CMD Pouch Product Line Manager. “Our focus has always been on advanced technology and 360-degree consultative support.”
This means that CMD has developed some unique, patented features with rich benefits in high-quality, high- performance systems. “Not everyone owns a CMD,” says Fuller, “the value delivered by our systems is not commonplace. It’s not a commodity machine.”
The 760 SUP Standup Pouch Converting System offers advantages that are laser-pointed at bringing significant value to serious pouch converters. Coined “the Profit Advantage,” the system is designed to optimize existing processes by slashing downtime and scrap, and offers unique, built-in analytics to ensure consistent product quality.
Kendall serves customers in the food, non-retail and personal care industry, and the 760-SUP delivers advantages that address common needs among these customers, chief among them is verifiable pouch quality, to ensure product safety and freshness.
“We understand how important it is to our customers to protect their product freshness and safety and their brand reputation,” says COO Russell Schneider. “The Intelligent Sealing Technology offered by the CMD machine means we can verify the seal parameters of every pouch we produce.”
The CMD machine is designed for quick changeovers between jobs, which builds in the flexibility for short runs and quicker deliveries.
“It allows us to competitively service customers in a greater capacity,” adds Russ. “We share the benefits of our investment with our customers through source reduction, lower production costs, increased speed to market, and flexibility to deliver on shorter runs.”
When it was determined that CMD was the right partner for Kendall’s expanding capabilities, they moved quickly. Completion of the order, taking delivery in (month/year), installation and training – all took place in three months. and a 2nd shift and more customers were added within the 1st quarter of production.
Since taking delivery of the system in November of 2019, Kendall has added more pouch customers and a second, 5-day shift. As word spreads of the company’s added capabilities, further expansion is considered, including the addition of a second system from CMD.
