Static charge created in web handling, unwinding and winding creates problems for web handling, the electronics controlling the process and is a safety hazard for personnel.
A presentation by Kelly Robinson at recent AIMCAL R2R Conferences discussed many of the issues with static and how to reduce it. The static voltage can easily reach 50,000V and is enough to harm or knock down personnel.
Now available are high-performance, long-range ionizers. These can be used to neutralize the static charge on one side of a web from a great distance. All metal must be further from the ionizer than the web.
The new static bars are shockless with the current limited to each ionizing pin, which greatly reduces the hazard of the static bar itself while reducing the hazards of static electricity. Read the application notes carefully.
