In general, we don’t need an engineer to maintain a drive system for web handling. For keeping the line running, we need an a very knowledgeable technologist or technician. That is because the drive system and associated equipment is about the most complicated equipment in the plant.
Skills needed are troubleshooting and a mechanical and electrical aptitude. A love of reading is good as drive manuals are often 300 pages long. Writing is important as well. You will need to keep a good log book.

The drive tech should be selected before the drive is commissioned. Many lessons will be learned from the commissioning team. That will involve a lot of overtime early on, but valuable drive troubleshooting skills will be developed.
Know how to troubleshoot your product. Traps and trending must be easy for you. You will know how to test fuses and semiconductors quickly. Connecting to the drive or drive master is not a tedious, time consuming operation. You know where your spare parts are.
