At the IWEB conference at Oklahoma State University in 2011, one of the feature speakers, Dr. Günther Brandenburg, presented an interesting paper about tension control for printers. In the course of his research with a major printer manufacturer, he noted the requirement for faster tension-regulator response.
Brandenburg's paper, "Advanced Process Models and Control Strategies for Rotary Printing Presses," describes the problem, but without specific metrics. I have often spoken and written on the need for faster regulators. Unfortunately, in the web-handling industry, we don't really even know how fast our regulators are tuned today. We should know that before we decide how fast the optimum response should be.
See my earlier post, Regulator Tuning – Request for Metrics requesting regulator response results in the industry.
