201.43a.01 – Title Slide
Welcome to web handling. My name is Dave Roisum. In this clip we begin a series on the taper tension control that is found on many winders.
201.43a.02 – What is it?
Taper is the automatic reduction of a TNT setting as a function of roll diameter or occasionally roll length. While we usually think of taper tension, most winders so equipped can also taper nip or torque differential. How this is done is covered in great detail in my winding course.
201.43a.03 – What is it good for?
As the lyrics for the 1960’s rock song War wisely ask “What is it good for?” The short answer is for taper almost nothing instead ofabsolutely nothing.
To put this into proper perspective, there are more than 100 winding defects in the must have Ultimate Web and Roll Troubleshooting Guide. Of these,
Taper helps enormously with two of the half dozen cases of telescoping, but not the other four.
Taper helps enormously with the poor roll structuring subcase of starring, but not with the other five.
Taper is, for all practical purposes, worthless and even distracting for the other 100 winding defects.
So if you are counting, that is 3 out of more than 100 winding defects.
My winding course covers in great detail winding defects as well as their causes and cures.
