From its manufacturing hub about 50 km from Seoul, SAM has established a customer base of more than 623 installations in 27 countries worldwide, and the printed packaging produced on its technology impinges in some shape or form on many of us in our daily life. The company has sales offices in Phoenix, NY, for North America, Selangor for the Malaysian region, and most recently, its European office in Casale Monferrato, midway between Milan and Turin, which was opened in 2013, was instrumental in the first use of Vetaphone by SAM.
Speaking for SAM, Engineering Manager Massimo Bernardelli said, “We have known of Vetaphone’s pre-eminence in the narrow web market for some time, so decided that the varied requirements of our newly inaugurated Test Lab facility seemed the ideal opportunity to try it on our solution coating line.” The Corona unit in question is a single-sided, 16-kW Vetaphone VE1F-A model, fitted with a ceramic coated backing roller. It has a 1000-mm web width and the capability of corona treating at 660 mpm on the solution coating line in Seoul. In production, web widths can be up to 3000 mm with operating speeds of 1000 mpm, but the Test Lab is already the longest of its type in the world.
Designed to test as wide a variety of coatings as possible, currently 35, and increasing to 50 by 2017, SAM’s Test Lab is the most modern available, and with the company’s commitment to helping its customers develop the test results into commercial reality, the need for accuracy and fine control of all aspects of each test is critical. “The Test Lab allows us to show alternative options to customers that can take their business into new markets, reduce costs and improve margins. To do that, we need to work with the top brand component manufacturers,” explained Bernardelli.
The Test Lab research capability includes solvent and water based, UV and 100% solids coating in its ‘clean room’ environment. The line has an exclusive design of cartridge coater for quick and easy changeovers to prove different processes, and a special dryer type that enables flotation and roll support trials.
Praising the Vetaphone unit for its design and ease of operation, Bernardelli was quick to mention the professional approach taken by the manufacturer, which left no question unanswered and all relevant facts included. “Just as we like to offer our customers a comprehensive package, so Vetaphone responded to our requests in a like manner. There seems to be an excellent synergy between the two companies, with each understanding and trusting the other – this bodes well for the future,” he added.
Although by comparison with some of its competitors, SAM is still a young company, it is growing fast. Now employing more than 200 worldwide and with a production capacity of 14 machines per year, the company enjoyed a $50-million turnover in 2015. The European office is strategically located in the heart of Italy’s burgeoning converting industry, and this is seen as key to opening what is potentially a lucrative market.
With a comprehensive range of products that includes solution coating, and extrusion coating and laminating lines, and engineering expertise for coating machines for film, paper, and specialist foils, SAM appears well set in Europe, and to date sales have been made and machines commissioned in Germany, Netherland, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Portugal and the UK, as well as Italy. According to Bernardelli, a typical sale takes one to two years from initial brief to installation, with machines being delivered up to 110 meters in length.
Summing up for Vetaphone, vp-Sales & Marketing Kevin McKell, who has long enjoyed close working relationship with SAM’s North American company, says, “This is a significant step for Vetaphone into the wide web market and we are grateful to SAM for placing their trust and reputation in our technology. It is already proving successful, and we look forward to growing our market penetration in the coating and extrusion sector.”
Responding on behalf of SAM North America, vp-Solution Coating Sales Don Teich adds, “Vetaphone was a natural for a growing company like SAM to get involved with. We value the way we can tap into the company's depth of knowledge to jointly develop and provide the best solutions for our customers."
