Snack-food laminate wins 2014 AIMCAL Sustainability Award

By Contributing Editor Hallie Forcinio

A downgauged metallized laminate used by Pepsico India Holdings Pvt. Ltd. (Frito-Lay Div.)’s Lehar brand snacks has won the 2014 AIMCAL Sustainability Award. Converted by UFLEX, Ltd. (Noida, India), parent company of AIMCAL member Flex America, Inc. (Elizabethtown, KY), the material was recognized for its part in reducing environmental impact, minimizing energy usage or waste, and/or increase recycling. This is the second consecutive year that UFLEX has won the Sustainability Award in the annual AIMCAL competition.

The lighter-weight laminate consists of 8-micron biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP)/rotogravure printing/8-micron low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/8-micron metallized biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET)/18-micron LDPE. It runs on vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machines filling four flavors of Lehar brand potato chips: Tangy Tomato, Spicy Masala, Simply Salted and Chatpateet Chatka. It replaces a substantially thicker, heavier laminate of 12-micron BOPP/10-micron LDPE/12-micron metalized BOPET/20-micron LDPE.

The 23% source reduction achieved with the lighter, thinner film means lower transportation costs for in-bound packaging materials and out-bound product shipments and fewer material roll changes on the VFFS equipment. Key to the downgauging achievement is the development of 8-micron BOPP film by UFLEX’s Flex Film subsidiary. The 8-micron film offers the same dimensional stability and stiffness of standard 12- and 15-micron BOPP, making it suitable for printing and lamination without any negative impact on handling or registration. Judges were impressed by the source reduction in every layer of the lamination and the absence of curl in the material.
