Problem Solving

Wishful Thinking – Winding Taper and TNT’s
Continuing the theme of the previous post, we now turn to an even stickier bit of wishful thinking.  That is, the desire/hope/wish/belief/etc that winding defects can be cured (to everyone’s satisfaction) or at least noticeably remedied by changing the winder TNT (Tension, Nip, Torque) cu...

Wishful Thinking – Tension and Wrinkling
Getting stuck in problem solving is epidemic.  We get stuck on wishful thinking, optimism, hope and a host of other ‘positive’ attitudes.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not suggesting that these traits are necessarily bad, only that they can be when you get stuck in a rut...

We recently encountered customer complaint regarding roll telescoping.  Presently, we have the same tension settings for two different types of foil that have different roughness values. Would you recommend a higher or lower rewind tension for smoother foil surface (less roughness value)? Whil...

The Optimum Component Repair Time
From the previous post we noted that nearly everyone has an idea of the costs of maintenance.  (We used cover grinding as an example, but the application is much wider than this).  The more frequently you grind the greater the maintenance costs.  If that is the only cost management ha...

The Sawtooth and Excessive MTBS (poor maintenance practice)
The Third Law of Thermodynamics and Murphy’s Law both require that things break down.  When do you get around to fixing them?  Maintenance culture tends to fall into one of two patterns.  The first is to fix it when it has to be fixed, i.e., the machine will no longer run saleab...

Plants have been a lifelong passion; I have grown (and killed) more than 1,000 species.  I would read, study and try best-practices for many areas of horticulture.  For example, the practice of putting drainage gravel at the bottom of containers/pots was taught by nearly every source for m...

Winding pressure-sensitive materials
Q: I plan to wind large rolls of delicate material on a two-drum winder. I am concerned that pressures might emboss the tender coating. A: There are two pressures to be concerned with. The first is the external nip pressure between the wound roll and the drum. (Note a similar problem is the interna...

Winding Recipes
Q: I am looking for a "cookbook" for winding different type of materials. Specifically, a book that would explain what tension and taper (%) as well as nip should be used for each material in order to make perfect rolls. A: Unfortunately, there are no "recipes'"to make a perfect roll. To begin with...

The following is historical fiction.  One where certain essential details are accurate, but the ‘conversation’ has been rewritten to protect the guilty. Dear Dr. Roisum, I was your student in a Converting School back in 20__. We now have a difficult web-handling problem caused ...

Recall from the previous post, that effective culling is economically better for both customer and supplier than are customer complaints.  Start culling now rather than wait for some magic bullet cure so the benefits are achieved sooner rather than later.  Culling can also help with possib...
