Vacuum Web Coating

Blogmaster: Dr. Charles A. Bishop

Hi, this is just my reminder that there is the AIMCAL annual technical conference coming up toward the end of the month at 23rd - 26th October at the Peppermill Resort Hotel in Reno.

I shall be attending and giving a Short Course on the "Basics of Roll-to-Roll Vacuum Deposition." This will focus on the the areas that give most problems such as the incoming substrate and winding the substrate through the deposition zone where there is a rapid and large temperature change. We will also look at substrate-surface contamination and cleaning and how this can affect the end product. Ideally, there will be time enough to demonstrate the TopVac software that models the substrate temperature and tension, showing how various factors can be used to control the substrate temperature.

I will also be presenting a paper in the conference. It will be centered around the problem of materials supply.

Blog - Comments

I hope I do not offend anyone who has submitted a comment and not seen it on the blog but let me explain when comments get included and when not.

My hope is that any comments will either reinforce what I have stated in the blog by adding some information or personal experience or the comment will challenge what I have stated again because of some alternative experience. This type of entry will be included.

Comments that simply state that the Blog entry was useful, good, bad or similar might massage my ego but does not really contribute to the knowledge base and so is not really helpful to others. Hence, I tend not to include these comments. I personally hate to follow up an entry only to find the comments that follow it do not contain any technical information. The reason I read blogs is to find things out and learn so am always disappointed when an entry does not contain any. Hence I try to only add comments that add to the technical content.

This is not to say I do not appreciate the comments of thanks or approval.

I hope you are happy with this methodology for adding comments.

He then entered University and obtained a Bachelors degree in materials engineering with a Diploma in Industrial Studies. During his final year he first started work on vacuum based research, helping develop a process for manufacturing titanium based bone implants for tendon location. He went on to obtain a Masters degree and Doctorate following further research into vacuum deposition processes. During this time and as a postgraduate he also worked as a consultant.

Charles next spent time in industry working for various divisions of ICI including polyesters, nylon, Imagedata, Flex Products Inc., and explosives as well as contributing to other projects. In 1998 he took the opportunity to return to consultancy work and set up his own company.

Charles has more than 30 years experience in vacuum deposition mainly onto flexible webs. He has regularly contributed papers to conferences and recently has edited this blog on behalf of AIMCAL as well as being one of their presenters for various webinars and the more formal Converting School courses.

Charles has also published 2 books, Vacuum deposition onto webs, films and foils and Roll-to-roll vacuum deposition of barrier coatings.
